Sleek hair is sticking around – get the look

Hair trends come and go, but one style that is showing no sign of decreasing in popularity is that of the sleek ponytail.

At the recent Emmy Awards, stars including Emily Ratajkowski, Sarah Hyland, and Priyanka Chopra all opted for variations on the look. Here we run through our top tips on how to get this easy look in the comfort of your own home.

The first stage of obtaining this style is straightening your locks. Ceramic straighteners arguably give the best finish, and it’s worth investing in a decent pair if you are planning to get straight hair on a regular basis. Ghd straighteners remain among the favorites with celebrities – try their ghd platinum, electric pink styler, with some of the price being donated to breast cancer charities.

Once you’ve straightened your hair, decide where you want the parting – do you want a side parting like Emily or a center part like Priyanka? Use a comb with a pointed end, which are readily available from pharmacies, to carefully and precisely divide the hair.

Then it’s time to slick on your product. Award-winning hairdresser Lee Stafford recommended his Wet look Gelee to Cover Media, explaining: “Scoop a small amount of the product into your hand and work through your hair concentrating at the roots and then use a comb to brush it through. It is the easiest way to get a sophisticated evening look with high impact!”

It’s also worth thinking about if you have the right face shape to pull off a completely flat, sleek look like Emily. If you have a rounder face, you can still experiment with the sleek look but can add a touch of volume as well.

“Building up the volume at the roots will give you the shape you need and can easily be done with my backcombing comb,” hair expert Mark Hill added to Cover Media. “Just remember to smooth over the volume created using the comb to keep the final look sleek and smooth.”

Once the hair is sleek, you need to finish it off by making it into a style. Do you want a ponytail for a modern finish or a chignon for a more classic look? Whatever look you go for, remember to keep your locks as shiny as possible. Mark recommends his Anti-Humidity Shine Spray and a small paddle brush as you tame the hair back.

Opt for a clear hair elastic to make your ponytail as simple as possible, or use clips in the same hue as your tresses if you are going for a chignon.

Once you have achieved the desired look, use some hairspray to ensure your locks don’t fall out of place throughout the evening. Redken’s Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist is a great option to finish off your sexy and sleek look.
